Miró’s Tapís de Tarragona (1972): Deluxe Issue and Lithograph Suite

Tapís de Tarragona connects an artist’s book with Miró’s tapestry project. For edition identification, the justification, paper, signature and complete group of compositions provide more useful evidence than the title alone.

Identify the issue

The Breething Books catalog records Barcelona: Sala Gaspar, 1972. Its example is numbered 61/100 on Guarro paper, with Miró’s pencil signature on the justification. The catalog distinguishes this deluxe group from an additional 1,000 copies on Sarrió paper without his pencil signature. Read the paper and issue designation together; a copied number or photographed signature alone does not identify every sheet.

Count compositions and sheets separately

The record describes ten original color lithographs, including eight double-page compositions, alongside texts by Rafael Orozco, Maria Lluïsa Borràs and Josep Royo. Ten compositions is not necessarily ten physically separate leaves. Make a collation record that identifies each composition and folded sheet, then check the text and justification material. Avoid counting the two facing halves of a double-page work as two separate lithographs.

Housing and condition

The recorded format is loose folded sheets in lithographic wrappers with a red cloth chemise and slipcase. A surviving case does not establish contents, and a full group of images does not establish that every wrapper or text element survives. Note condition at folds and sheet edges and inspect for trimming, substitutions and detached sections.

Keep references and evidence together

The product description cites Cramer’s Joan Miró: Catalogue Raisonné des Livres Illustrés, no. 164, and Mourlot 872–881. Those are recorded bibliographic leads; these notes do not claim a fresh examination of the printed catalogues. Copy-specific confirmation comes from the actual justification and photographs.
