William Blake
Explore two William Blake-related books in the Breething Books catalog: a twentieth-century facsimile of Songs of Innocence and Experience and a nineteenth-century gift book containing his engraving The Hiding of Moses. Each product page has its own catalog description and photographs.
Blake’s poetry and the printed image
William Blake (1757–1827) made poetry and image parts of the same creative work. He etched the plates for Songs of Innocence in 1789 and completed those for Songs of Experience in 1794. He continued printing and coloring copies over subsequent decades. The resulting books vary visually: color, lettering and surrounding designs participate in the reading of the poems.
That history makes the type of edition especially significant. The 1955 Trianon Press Songs in this catalog is a facsimile of a particular surviving copy, offering a later reconstruction of the illuminated pages. Remember Me! instead contains Blake’s engraved illustration The Hiding of Moses in a nineteenth-century gift book. Together, these holdings show two distinct settings for his work in print.
