Picasso’s work in print and in books
Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) treated printmaking as a place to explore the act of making art. In the Vollard Suite, produced in the 1930s, artists, models and sculptures recur; an image of Rembrandt places Picasso’s own inventions in dialogue with an earlier master. The printed sheet could sustain a sequence of ideas, rather than simply reproduce a painting.
Illustrated books offer another way into this work: an image encounters a poem or a critical text, and the reader discovers it through the pace of turning pages. The books here connect Picasso with Eugenio d’Ors, Georges Hugnet and Jean Cocteau. Their pochoirs, zincographs and lithographs have different physical qualities, so the process and edition are part of the experience of collecting them.
