MIRÓ, JOAN. Tapís de Tarragona. Barcelona: Sala Gaspar, 1972.
First edition. Illustrated artist's book containing ten original color lithographs by Joan Miró, eight of which extend across double-page spreads, accompanied by texts by Rafael Orozco, Maria Lluïsa Borràs, and Josep Royo.
One of only 100 deluxe copies printed on special Guarro paper and signed in pencil by Joan Miró; this copy number 61/100. An additional 1,000 copies were issued on Sarrió paper without Miró's pencil signature.
The portfolio documents Miró's celebrated Tapís de Tarragona, created in collaboration with the Catalan textile artist Josep Royo. Miró originally conceived the monumental tapestry in connection with Dr. Rafael Orozco, who had treated the artist's daughter following a serious accident. The project became an important early collaboration between Miró and Royo and a significant development in Miró's exploration of monumental textile works.
The suite translates Miró's characteristic vocabulary of bold black gestures and brilliant primary colors into a sequence of exceptionally vibrant lithographic compositions.
Loose folded sheets as issued in lithographic wrappers, housed in the publisher's red cloth chemise and matching slipcase.
