Larry Fink

Gesture, intimacy and social life

Larry Fink photographed people at close quarters, finding expressive gestures and charged encounters in parties, family gatherings and other social settings. His black-and-white photographs make hands, faces and the spaces between people part of an intensely observed composition.

His celebrated Social Graces series brought different social worlds into a sustained photographic conversation. The tension between public performance and private feeling also makes his portfolios rewarding to consider as sequences, rather than simply as groups of individual prints.

Recent acquisitions

Party — Heritage Auction 8267, lot 73531

Breething Books acquired Larry Fink’s Party at Heritage Auctions’ Photography sale on October 2, 2026. The portfolio is complete with fifteen oversized digital pigment prints from images made in 1998–2000 and printed in 2006. Each sheet measures 36 × 36 inches. Each print is signed in pencil verso; the colophon is signed and numbered 5/12. The portfolio was published by The Grove Printing Studio and is housed in its red linen portfolio. Breething Books acquired the lot for a $2,400 hammer price, $3,000 including buyer’s premium.

Larry Fink–April, 1999 — Heritage Auction 8267, lot 73550

Breething Books also acquired Larry Fink–April, 1999 at the same October 2, 2026 Heritage sale. This is the complete portfolio of twenty gelatin silver prints from 1990–1998, printed in 1999. The sheets measure 14 × 11 inches or the reverse. Each print is signed, titled, dated and editioned 2/50 in pencil verso; the colophon is signed and editioned 2/50 in ink. Heritage’s auction archive records the lot as sold for $2,625.

These acquisitions are documented as complete portfolio objects. Breething Books records edition, signatures, colophon, print process, dimensions, completeness, housing and auction provenance separately from later retail valuation.

Books, portfolios and editions

When comparing Larry Fink photographs, books and portfolios, the edition details matter as much as the image: printing date, photographic process, sheet and image size, signatures or numbering, completeness, and original portfolio or housing can distinguish materially different objects. Breething Books records those copy-specific features on the individual item or acquisition record rather than treating every appearance of the same image as equivalent.
