Henry Miller’s Insomnia (1970), Edition G: Book, Broadsides and Box

Loujon Press’s Insomnia, or the Devil at Large combines a book with a large portfolio presentation. An edition letter and a component-by-component description are essential when comparing examples.

Read Edition G on its own terms

The Breething Books record identifies Albuquerque: Loujon Press, 1970, Edition G, one of 385 copies. The described book is signed and dated May 1, 1970, by Henry Miller on its colophon. These details come from the cataloged example. Do not extend Edition G’s count or contents to another edition letter without examining its statement.

Build a component checklist

The catalog describes a spiral-bound book with gold-and-yellow foil dust jacket; twelve broadsides reproducing Miller’s works; a cardstock plate bearing a pictorial title label; and a custom wooden portfolio with a recessed book compartment and sliding front panel. Record the presence and condition of each component. Twelve reproduced images are not twelve original paintings.

Separate edition components from copy-specific extras

This example also retains a Loujon Press broadside and a handwritten letter from Jon Webb about edition pricing, plus a subscriber’s plaque naming Douglas Edward Dillard. These are described features of the particular ensemble, not proof that every Edition G copy contains the same letter or plaque.

An unsigned image on the interior rear panel is recorded as possibly a painting or print, with its precise medium undetermined. Keep that uncertainty in the description until the physical object and documentary evidence resolve it; do not count it as an authenticated original painting.

Condition of the container matters

Inspect the sliding panel, wood edges, decorative covering, photograph and interior support separately from the book and broadsides. The current record notes box wear and aged interior foam. The container may affect safe storage even when the paper contents appear well preserved.
