VARIOUS ARTISTS. Colors: A Portfolio of Original Offset Prints by 10 Imagemakers. Tallahassee: Florida State University, 1975.
Complete portfolio of 40 original color offset lithographs—four works by each of ten experimental American photographers and imagemakers:
Henry Holmes Smith, Robert Heinecken, Todd Walker, Darryl Curran, Eileen Cowin, John Craig, Virgil M. Mirano, Betty Hahn, Bea Nettles, and James Henkel.
Each artist created the color-separation negatives used to produce the prints, exploring photo-offset lithography as a direct artistic medium rather than as a conventional means of reproduction. The portfolio documents the influential Colorsexhibition organized by project director Robert W. Fichter at the Florida State University Art Gallery and sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Printed by Rose Printing on Lancaster Bond paper. The prints measure approximately 16x20 inches and are housed loose as issued with the introductory and colophon sheets in the publisher’s portfolio case, measuring approximately 20½x16½ inches. Cover designed by Joe Ruther.
Number 142 of an edition of 300 portfolios. The colophon is signed by all ten participating artists.
An important and visually striking document of experimental American photography and printmaking during the 1970s, featuring notable practitioners Robert Heinecken, Betty Hahn, Bea Nettles, and Henry Holmes Smith.
