Diego Rivera’s 1946 Mexican Frescoes Portfolio: Contents and Format

Contents and format notes for 10 Reproductions in Color of Mexican Frescoes, the Diego Rivera portfolio recorded in the Breething Books catalog.

What the images represent

The catalog records ten loose color reproductions of Rivera’s Mexican frescoes, printed in Mexico in 1946, with Justino Fernández named in the title. The sheets reproduce mural images; they are not the original frescoes themselves. Keep that distinction when comparing this publication with original drawings, paintings or separately issued signed prints.

Check the ten-sheet group

Compare the title and introductory material with the plates shown for a particular copy. A cover or attractive selection of images does not by itself establish that every sheet is present. Count the sheets, check for duplicate or substituted images and record tears, staining, trimming or inscriptions individually.

Loose format matters

The catalog describes the material as loose as printed. Assess the sheets and any surviving enclosure separately. Keep a copy-specific record of the housing rather than assuming that every portfolio retains the same cover or protective case.

Use the copy’s evidence

The date, number of reproductions and loose format are recorded in the current catalog. Edition size, signatures and a publisher’s name should come from the particular copy’s printed information or separate documentary evidence; none is supplied by these notes.
