COCTEAU, JEAN. Le Grand Écart, suivi de Orphée. Paris: Librairie Arthème Fayard, 1954.

Later French edition of Cocteau’s celebrated novel, distinguished by a full-page original ink drawing attributed to Jean Cocteau. Executed on the front blank, the drawing depicts two overlapping profiles and is inscribed “Affectueusement, Jean,” followed by Cocteau’s characteristic star device.

Presented to Martin Shuttleworth, the British writer and interviewer who, with Simon Raven, conducted the landmark Graham Greene interview published as The Art of Fiction No. 3 in the Autumn 1953 issue of The Paris Review.

Accompanied by a letter from the Shuttleworth estate documenting the book’s provenance and attribution. A compelling literary association connecting Cocteau with a contributor to the formative early issues of The Paris Review.
