KEARNS, JAMES; JOHN CIARDI, text. The Performers. Philadelphia: Charles Hunsberger, [ca. 1975].
Complete portfolio of 12 original etchings by James Kearns, accompanied by a text by poet John Ciardi. Each etching is printed on deckle-edged Rives B.F.K. paper, bears the printer’s blindstamp, and is individually titled and signed in pencil by Kearns. The subjects—including clowns, dancers, acrobats, and strongmen—reflect the psychologically charged circus imagery for which Kearns is best known.
Large folio, approximately 23 x 15 inches, with the contents loose as issued beneath tissue guards in the publisher’s tan linen clamshell case titled “James Kearns.”
Published in an edition of 50 numbered portfolios plus 10 artist’s proofs. This example is inscribed “A.P. / Artist Proof” and further designated as the artist’s own copy.
Also included is a two-page autograph letter signed by Kearns and addressed to “John,” almost certainly John Ciardi, discussing the pulling of impressions, scheduling, and assembly of the portfolio. An additional unused title and letterpress bifolium, not ordinarily present, is included.
A particularly desirable copy of this scarce portfolio, distinguished by its artist’s-copy designation, Kearns’ original working correspondence, and the extra unused printed matter.
Condition
The clamshell case is lightly sunned with minor edge rubbing and a crease to one flap. The etchings and printed contents are clean, with tissue guards present. The letter has been folded once and shows light handling wear.
